Talk: How can we build a product in the open https://youtube.com/watch?v=kuzwUFuIyk4&si=UBM6CYgFgwBPkvrL
Chris is behind a lot of the good work that SciML does in the Julia ecosystem and has partly supported this with a few companies (a bit like the posit approach). This is a really interesting talk on how that all works. Notes following shortly.

I really enjoyed this talk.
Interestingly, I linked this to a friend of mine in modelling for F1 and they are thinking of going the reverse direction to the same goal. They have some really slick internal ecosystems for modelling cars (developed closed source over years) and are thinking of making the core components open source to reduce the problems if the core devs leave.

Yeah it’s interesting isn’t it. Some elements are a challenge to replicate in a setting where the majority of customers aren’t for profit entities and often have no control over funding for the tools/methods they rely on.
Companies open sourcing their internals is a pretty classic path and I think there is lots of good evidence it ends up being good for them. I think that isn’t directly applicable except when it comes to places that have internal models (even where pseudo open) and helping pull them out into useful components of a wider ecosystem.
